Artist of the Month #02: Kelsie Firth

Artist of the Month #02: Kelsie Firth

Meet Kelsie Firth – The artist bringing bold tattoos and spooky creativity to life.

With Halloween just around the corner, we couldn't think of a more fitting artist to feature this October than the incredibly talented Kelsie Firth (@kelsiefirthtattoo). From bold, large-scale tattoos to bringing our very own Halloween collection to life, Kelsie's creativity has certainly made its mark on Skin Jungle!

Kelsie's tattooing journey began back in 2016, when she embarked on a traditional apprenticeship before turning professional in 2018. Having explored a few different career paths in her early twenties, she found herself craving more creative freedom. Growing up surrounded by tattoo culture, thanks to her biker parents and love of alternative music, stepping into the industry felt like a natural fit.

With a particular love for large-scale pieces, intricate snake imagery and all things spooky, Kelsie enjoys the challenge of creating tattoos that work with the natural flow of the body. It's this passion for bold artwork and attention to detail that makes her work so distinctive.

This October is particularly exciting for us, as Kelsie is also the artist behind the illustrations for our Halloween collection! Seeing her artwork make the journey from an iPad sketch to a finished Skin Jungle product has been an incredibly special experience, and we're thrilled to have her creativity become part of our brand.

We're so happy to have Kelsie as part of the Skin Jungle Sponsored Artist team! We caught up with her to chat about her journey into tattooing, her convention essentials, her love of horror films and, of course, her dream Halloween tattoo.

When did you start your career in tattooing, and why did you feel drawn to this industry?

"I got into tattooing in the summer of 2016 through a traditional apprenticeship, and started professionally in 2018!

After trying out a few different career paths in my early twenties, I got to a point where I craved a bit of creative and personal freedom, when an opportunity to get into tattooing near enough landed on my lap, at the perfect time! I was a creative kid but, like a lot of us, I was discouraged in favour of more ‘academic’ paths, and so it was lovely to come full circle back to creating, and now I couldn’t imagine my life without it.

Having bikers as parents, a navy dad, and growing up into the alt/metal music scene, I’ve always been around tattoos and fascinated by the interesting, creative, liberal people they were attached to. So it was only a matter of time before i found myself in this space!"

You attend a lot of tattoo conventions, if you could give one tip to an artist going for the first time, what would it be?

"Once you get tattooing on the day, it can be hard to sometimes leave your booth and find time to eat or drink, so a game changer for me this year has been to bring a travel kettle; brews on tap!"

What's your all time favourite horror or halloween film?

"I’ll always have a soft spot for Thirteen Ghosts because it was the first horror film I ever saw. Nowadays my favourite has gotta be anything from the Evil Dead franchise. My favourite Halloween themed film is a little less cool, I’m a 90’s kid, so it’s gotta be Hocus Pocus, for the pure nostalgia!"

What's your favourite tattoo you've ever done and why?

"It’s hard to choose just one favourite, but the most impactful ones for me are more large-scale pieces, which take a bit more thought with regards to placement and flow. I recently tattooed a full outer leg, classic floral and snake imagery, but working on a larger area really challenges you! You get a great sense of satisfaction when your client has trusted you with such a large part of themselves, you step back and it just works with the customer, works in the space and looks like it’s always been there."

If you could only tattoo one animal for the rest of your career, what would it be?

"Definitely snakes; I could tattoo repetitive snake scales allll day!"

What's it like seeing your design go from artwork to being on one of our product lines?

"Incredibly surreal. I’ve rarely worked with brands and I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it’s been the easiest, smoothest process I could have hoped for. It’s been lovely to see it from a design on my iPad screen to the physical product."

Why do you resonate with Skin Jungle over other industry names?

"The whole Skin Jungle team are just a lovely bunch of humans! Had the pleasure of meeting some of the guys at conventions this year and it’s always a wholesome time. I love their dedication to giving back to the community and to charity as well as the move to recyclable packaging."

It's October, so we have to ask; What's your ultimate Halloween tattoo? If a client gave you completely free rein to design something.

"Ooo maybe a large scale blackwork demonic lady head with horns, black eyes, thorns, spiderwebs, all that sort of stuff! Nice bold lines, dark textures… although to be honest, anything spooky is my dream project! From the larger concepts to cute little flash pieces like pumpkins and ghosts."

If you were deserted in a Jungle with only three items, what would they be?

"This is a tricky one! I’m never very good at these, but I’d have to cheat a little bit and say my music collection, snacks, and some stationary for doodling … I’m not sure I’d survive for very long, but at least I’d have a nice time!"

And that's a wrap on October's Skin Jungle Artist of the Month! A huge thank you to Kelsie for taking the time to share her journey with us and, of course, for bringing her incredible artwork to our Halloween collection!

One of our favourite things about this series is getting to celebrate the talented people who make the tattoo industry what it is. From her love of all things spooky to her passion for creating bold, large-scale tattoos, it's been lovely getting to know Kelsie a little better.

Be sure to check out her work over on Instagram @kelsiefirthtattoo, give her a follow and keep an eye out for our Halloween collection featuring her artwork!
